I've used 8-bit microcontrollers before. Specifically, I'm familiar with the PIC 18F family from Microchip. Aside from being cheap and coming with a programmer as part of the package, why should I learn the STM8S family of processors? What are the compelling features of the development package and the microcontrollers?

The STM8S is covering a larger range of application 4K to 128K, 20pins to 80 pins. The performance is far better at 16MHZ. even @ 40MHz, the PIC is not reaching the performance. No mention of the noise emission of the PIC at that speed. You have checked the datasheet of the STM8S? Internal RC 2%, real non intrusive debug module, I²C, SPI and USART are always available. The memory is linear, (no paging) even the 128K has no paging. Regarding price, there is no comparison. the STM8S is far cheaper.

Thanks. I've done quite a bit of PIC work in the past so this helps. I'd vote you up if our administrator/moderator would start voting so the rest of us could. :) – Troy J. Farrell Feb 5 at 20:21
